The History of Bell Bottoms

The History of Bell Bottoms

Did you know that bell bottoms pants were first worn by sailors during the war of 1812. Yup, sailors wore them because the flare bottom offered more function.  It was easy for them to roll these bad boys up when trenching through high waters.

In 1920 is when they became fashionable. Coco Chanel brought them into the fashion world. But it wasn’t until the 1970’s  that the American hippie culture adopted the bell bottom and this was all due to Sonny and Cher wearing them on their TV Show.

By the late 1970’s everyone was wearing bell bottoms. Bell bottoms were available not only in denim but in cotton, corduroy and satin polyester.

In the 90’s there was a big craze of wearing bell bottoms in a grungy style. It wasn’t until 2014, that the bell bottom trend made its comeback, which today they are still very popular.

So I say, what are you waiting for, go and grab you a pair. And you might as well hold onto them forever, because as history shows, the bell bottom will never go away.
